What is BaZi?
BaZi (八字, literally "eight characters"), also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny, is a Chinese astrology system that maps your birth moment onto the Chinese sexagenary calendar. Unlike Western astrology — which maps the positions of planets — BaZi maps the elemental energy of time itself.
Your birth year, month, day, and hour each form a pillar. Every pillar pairs a Heavenly Stem with an Earthly Branch — eight characters in total — which together form a chart of your natural temperament, strengths, and the timing of your life phases.
Your Four Pillars
A complete BaZi chart has four pillars, each representing a different part of your life:
Year Pillar
Ancestry & childhood
Month Pillar
Parents & career
Day Pillar
Self & marriage
Hour Pillar
Later life & children
Your Day Master
The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar — the single character that represents your core self. Everything else in your chart is read relative to it: how your Five Elements support or drain you, and how the Ten Gods describe your relationship with money, career, authority, and relationships.
Five Elements Balance
Your chart is composed of the five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water. A free BaZi reading shows which elements are strongest and weakest in your chart, and how to restore balance in your daily life — from your career choices to the crystals that align with your energy.
Luck Pillars — Your 10-Year Cycles
Your natal chart is static, but your life isn't. Luck Pillars (大运) are 10-year cycles that overlay your birth chart and shift its elemental quality. Reading your current Luck Pillar shows the timing of your best windows for career moves, relationships, and major decisions.
Five Elements & Your Birth Year
Each year in the Chinese calendar carries one of the five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water — paired with one of the 12 zodiac animals. Your birth year's element is the starting flavor of your chart, though your full BaZi reading goes deeper through the Four Pillars.
Metal years
e.g. 1960, 1961, 1970, 1980
Water years
e.g. 1952, 1963, 1972, 1983
Wood years
e.g. 1954, 1965, 1974, 1984
Fire years
e.g. 1956, 1957, 1967, 1986

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a BaZi calculator?
A BaZi calculator converts your birth date and time into a Four Pillars of Destiny chart. It maps your birth moment onto the Chinese sexagenary calendar to show your Year, Month, Day, and Hour pillars.
What element is my Chinese zodiac year?
Each year pairs a zodiac animal with one of the five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water. Examples: 1956 and 1957 are Fire years (Fire Monkey, Fire Rooster); 1960 and 1961 are Metal years (Metal Rat, Metal Ox); 1963 is a Water year (Water Rabbit). Run your full birth date through the calculator to see your personal chart balance, which is far more specific than the year element alone.
Is BaZi the same as Chinese zodiac?
No. Chinese zodiac looks only at your birth year's animal sign. BaZi uses your birth year, month, day, and hour to build a full four-pillar chart with a Day Master, element balance, and Ten Gods — a much more personal map.
What is a Day Master?
Your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar — the character that represents your core self. It's the reference point for reading your whole chart.
Do I need my exact birth time?
It's ideal but not required. An exact birth time gives you the complete four-pillar chart and accurate Luck Pillars. Without it, you can still read three pillars.
Is the BaZi calculator free?
Yes — the calculator reveals your Four Pillars chart, Day Master, and Five Elements balance free, with no sign-up. A deeper personalized reading is available as an optional upgrade.
BaZi readings are for self-reflection and cultural reference only — not medical, financial, or legal advice.
