When two people ask whether their charts “match”, the first thing a BaZi reader usually looks at is the Day Master. It is the single character that stands for the person, and comparing two of them is the quickest way to get a first read on how two people sit next to each other. This page covers what that comparison actually involves — and where it stops.
Your Day Master (日主) is the Heavenly Stem of your day pillar, the fifth character in a BaZi chart. In a system of eight characters, it is the one read as “you”: the reference point that everything else is measured against. It is not your whole personality, and it is not your fate. It is the centre of gravity the rest of the chart is read around.
There are ten Day Masters, because the ten Heavenly Stems fall into the five elements in their yang and yin forms: Jia (甲) and Yi (乙) are yang and yin Wood; Bing (丙) and Ding (丁) Fire; Wu (戊) and Ji (己) Earth; Geng (庚) and Xin (辛) Metal; Ren (壬) and Gui (癸) Water. To read the ten profiles one at a time, start with our BaZi reading hub. To simply find yours, the free Day Master tool takes a few seconds.
Once you have both Day Masters, you are comparing two elements through the ordinary grammar of the five elements. There are five relationships, and each one reads differently in a partnership:
| Between the two Day Masters | How the pairing usually reads |
|---|---|
| Same element | A shared register. You tend to think in the same terms, which makes agreement easy and perspective harder to come by. |
| Their element generates yours | A feeding dynamic. They tend to supply what you draw on; steady, but it can drift into one-sided giving. |
| Your element generates theirs | The mirror image: you are the one supplying. Warm and productive, until you stop noticing what it costs. |
| Their element controls yours | A structuring dynamic. They set edges and pace; useful when you want structure, wearing when you do not. |
| Your element controls theirs | You are the structuring one. The same relationship seen from the other side — clarity for you, pressure for them. |
The generating cycle runs Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and back to Wood. The controlling cycle runs Wood over Earth, Earth over Water, Water over Fire, Fire over Metal, Metal over Wood. Those two cycles are the whole vocabulary; there is nothing else being applied at this level.
Notice what the table does and does not say. None of these five readings is a verdict. A controlling pairing is not a bad relationship — it describes who provides structure. A generating pairing is not a good one by default; it describes who provides energy. The five elements describe energy, not merit.
If you want to do this yourself, take it in three steps.
In practice, the first two steps take a minute and give you a vocabulary. Step three is the part that takes a reading — which is what the compatibility tool is for.
A Day Master pairing is a starting position, not a result. Two charts can share the same Day Master relationship and feel entirely different, because the month pillar sets the season, the hour pillar colors the private side of a person, and the balance of all five elements across both charts decides whether a given pairing is resourced or strained.
This is also why two people with an ostensibly “difficult” Day Master pairing are often told, correctly, that the charts still work. The Day Master opens the door. The rest of the chart decides what is in the room. If you want the wider view, our compatibility overview lays out the four dimensions a full comparison examines.
