Ten Gods in a Relationship

By Time Value

The Ten Gods (十神) is the part of BaZi that gives every other element in a chart a job title. Once you know your Day Master, each remaining stem and branch is read relative to it, and the relationship between them takes one of ten names. In a compatibility reading, that machinery does something quietly useful: it describes the role a partner tends to play in your life.

How a partner shows up as a Ten God

Every element stands in one of five relationships to your Day Master: it can be the same element, it can generate yours, it can be generated by yours, it can control yours, or it can be controlled by yours. Multiply by polarity — same sign or opposite — and you get ten positions. That is the Ten Gods.

So when a reader looks at a partner's element and says it lands in your Direct Wealth (正财) position, they are not describing your bank balance. They are saying: this person's element sits in the place your chart labels as the resource-and-order role. The label comes from the grammar, not from a judgement about the person.

Where their element landsThe role it tends to bring into the relationship
Direct Wealth (正财) / Indirect Wealth (偏财)Practicality and resource. Often reads as the partner who makes things concrete, plans, provisions and keeps the household running.
Direct Officer (正官) / Seven Killings (七杀)Order and responsibility. Often reads as structure, standards and a sense of duty — steadying, and occasionally stern.
Eating God (食神) / Hurting Officer (伤官)Ease and expression. Often reads as the one who lightens a room, makes play possible, and says the thing nobody else will.
Direct Resource (正印) / Indirect Resource (偏印)Nourishment and support. Often reads as care, patience and a sense of being looked after — sometimes to the point of cosiness.
Friend (比肩) / Rob Wealth (劫财)Peer and equal. Often reads as sibling-like companionship, shared ground and healthy rivalry.

The ten names are covered one by one in our Ten Gods overview. What matters for a relationship is the shape of the list, not the labels themselves.

Reading the two most common roles

In practice, two positions come up most often when people describe a long partnership.

Direct Wealth (正财) is the role of the practical provider. When a partner's element lands here, the relationship tends to organise itself around tangible things: schedules, money, repairs, the shape of a week. That is genuinely useful, and it can read as unromantic if nobody names it. The same partner may express warmth through doing rather than saying.

Direct Officer (正官) is the role of structure and duty. Here the relationship tends to organise itself around standards — what is owed, what is expected, what counts as doing it properly. It is the pattern behind couples who feel like a team with a shared brief. The friction to watch is rigidity: structure that stops flexing when circumstances change.

Neither is a compliment or a criticism. A chart with a strong Direct Wealth signature is not more loving than one with a strong Eating God signature; the two simply express affection in different currencies.

It's a lens, not a verdict

The single most useful thing to understand about Ten Gods in a relationship is that they describe interaction patterns, not outcomes. The same pairing reads differently from each person's side, because each chart has its own Day Master and therefore its own set of roles. A partner who is your Direct Wealth may find that you are their Hurting Officer — the relationship has two descriptions, not one.

That is why a Ten Gods reading is best used as a translation aid. It gives you words for what each person is already doing in the relationship. Frequently asked questions

What does it mean if my partner is my Direct Wealth?
It means their element sits in the position your chart labels as the practical, resource-oriented role. In a relationship it usually describes the partner who makes things concrete and keeps the practical side moving.
Is a partner being my Seven Killings a bad sign?
No. Seven Killings (七杀) is the yang controlling position, which reads as strong structure and high expectations. It is a description of pressure and pace, not of harm.
Do both people in a couple have the same readings?
No. Ten Gods are always calculated relative to one person's Day Master, so each partner has their own set of positions. A full comparison shows both.
