Compatibility reading has a strong association with romance, largely because that is how it is usually marketed. The method itself has no such preference. Two charts can be compared for any relationship that matters, and friendship is one of the relationships where the reading is most straightforwardly useful.
The reason is that friendship asks a simpler question than partnership does. It is not about shared domestic life or long-term entanglement. It is about whether two people replenish each other, and about what kind of company each tends to be.
A romantic comparison spends much of its effort on proximity: how two people handle the same room, the same week, the same recurring argument. Friendship does not put the same weight there. What matters more is the exchange — whether being in each other's company tends to top you up or run you down.
That makes the reading simpler, not shallower. With the domestic layer set aside, three things carry most of the signal: element complement, Day Master relationship, and the traditional branch harmonies that the zodiac layer already describes. If you want the general method, the compatibility overview applies to any pairing; what follows is the friendship-specific reading of it.
The same three steps work every time, in this order.
The free BaZi calculator gives you both element distributions, and our five elements overview explains what each element tends to look like in a person.
Some friendships are tiring in a way that is hard to name. The draining pattern in the five element cycles describes exactly that: one element draws on the other in the generating cycle read in reverse, so the exchange runs mostly one way.
Read that as information about pacing rather than as a reason to end anything. A friendship where you supply most of the listening, or the organising, or the enthusiasm is often a good friendship with an unbalanced load. The useful move is to notice which part of it costs you and adjust how much of that part you take on. Many long friendships are exactly this, and the people in them simply learned, at some point, how to say no to the right things.
