The Monkey (猴 · Hóu) is the ninth animal of the cycle, and its fixed element is Metal. In the traditional reckoning the Monkey is the branch 申, the sign of cleverness, adaptability, and the quick hand that turns any situation to advantage. Recent Monkey years include 2028, 2016, 2004, 1992, and 1980.
The Monkey has no direct clash or harmony with the Goat — 申 and 未 sit at a comfortable distance — so 2027 is not, for the Monkey, a year of sharp relationship friction. Its meaning comes through the Five Elements, and the picture is a double one. The year's stem 丁 is Fire, and Fire melts Metal; but the year's branch 未 is Earth, and Earth produces Metal. The Monkey's own element is therefore both pressured from above and fed from below in the same year.
Read together, the Monkey's 2027 is Metal held in a balance: Yin Fire above works on it, and the Goat's Earth below replenishes it. The traditional reading of this double pull is not of loss but of refinement — Metal is the element that is improved by fire, shaped and tempered rather than simply destroyed. The counsel that accompanies it is precision: a Metal sign in a Fire-over-Earth year does best when it works with skill and care, letting pressure sharpen it instead of wearing it down.
The Chinese year begins at Lì Chūn (立春), around February 3–5, 2027. The Monkey, traditionally the quickest and most resourceful of the twelve, meets a year whose rhythm is the Fire Goat's own — patient, low-summer, consolidating. It is a year, the culture's reading runs, in which the Monkey's cleverness is best spent on finishing and refining what already exists, rather than on restless new starts.
