The Snake (蛇 · Shé) is the sixth animal of the cycle, and its fixed element is Fire. In the traditional reckoning the Snake is the branch 巳, the sign of wisdom, intuition, and the quiet, coiled patience that waits for the right moment. Recent Snake years include 2025, 2013, 2001, 1989, and 1977.
The Snake and the Goat sit one animal apart, with no direct clash or harmony between 巳 and 未. What defines the Snake's 2027 is element: the Snake is Fire, and the year's stem 丁 is also Fire — Yin Fire, to be precise, the same candle-flame register the Snake itself knows well. Traditional culture reads a Fire sign in a Fire-stem year as a year of self-recognition — the Snake's native element echoed back by the year, neither opposing nor forcing it, but amplifying it.
The Snake's 2027 runs through Fire meeting Fire, over the Goat's Earth (未). In the generating cycle, Fire produces Earth — so the year's doubled Fire flows into the Goat's Earth, meaning the Snake's own element is steadily drawn off into the year's grounding work. The traditional counsel for a Fire sign in a Fire-over-Earth year is to keep fuel in reserve: fire that gives all its heat to the earth beneath it can leave itself dim, so the Snake is advised to keep part of its warmth for itself rather than pouring everything outward.
The Chinese year begins at Lì Chūn (立春), around February 3–5, 2027. In the old calendar the Snake is read as the most inward of the twelve — an animal that sheds its skin and renews in quiet. The Fire Goat year's patient, low-summer rhythm suits that temperament: a year for measured transformation rather than display, and for letting the quiet work of the year do its slow, sure work.
